8 Easy Steps to Start your Gluten Free Diet

Starting a gluten free lifestyle can be overwhelming - in fact, many people that visit our office say the hardest thing about the gluten free diet is figuring out how to start! We suggest Baby Steps and here are a few tips that will help you get started.
  1. Find a list of gluten free items and highlight the items that you like.  There are many foods that are naturally gluten free and you probably already like many of them.  Take this list to the grocery store until you have the list memorized.
  2. Read labels - Many products will have the words "gluten free" on the outside packaging - however, many times you will need to look through the ingredients to really learn what is actually in your food
  3. Find restaurants that offer gluten free entrees - most restaurants will offer their menu online so that you can find one before you head out for dining.
  4. Do your research - there are all kinds of helpful books and magazines on eating gluten free.  They include recipes, tips and suggestions on how to take your current recipe and make it gluten free.
  5. Stick to REAL food when you begin.  Avoid processed and try to consume fruits, vegetables, meat and whole grains.
  6. Be Patient - Remember that not everything gluten free is going to be tasty (or at least not tasty in the way you are accustom).  It will take some time to adjust.
  7. Create a Support System - Follow Blogs, Twitter Feeds and LIKE facebook pages that promote gluten free living.  They will offer lots of tips that will keep you on track.  Get friends and family involved - this will be a great resource to help you with new recipes!
  8. Meet with a professional that understands gluten free diets and celiac disease.  They can offer tremendous help and support to make sure you are keeping your diet gluten free AND getting all the nutrients and vitamins you need to stay healthy.
The staff at PURE HEALTH would love the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your health needs and concerns.   If you are in the Tulsa area, please give us a call to set up an appointment.  If you are not a local resident, soon we will be offering new services that will allow us to meet with you from the comfort of your home.  LIKE our Facebook Page and Watch for announcements!!
